NO. 38 :Help to protect wildlife

Help to protect wildlife

Simple things you can do to help protect our unique coastal wildlife.
Cigarette butts, broken glass and other garbage left behind on the coast. Unaware or insensitive humans. Dogs, cats and their business. Thanks to our behaviours (and those of our pets) our coast is a minefield of dangers for local wildlife. But it doesn't take much to minimise such threats so that our native animals survive and thrive - and it all starts with you.
Here's how you can help look after our wildlife.
·     Ensure your pet is not endangering native animals
Follow the regulations pertaining to dogs on beaches and other coastal areas, pick up your dog poo, keep your cat indoors or confined to your property, especially at night. Read more here about the impact of cats on our coast.
·     Ensure you are not endangering native animals or destroying their habitat
Follow the signs and stick to walking tracks, take your litter home with you or use the bins at the beach to dispose of it properly, take special care around wildlife or in areas where native wildlife has been sighted. Remember that all beaches along the Great Ocean Road between Torquay and Lorne are smoke and glass-free for a number of very good reasons.  Read more about the impact of litter on our coast.
·     Respect the animals
Steer clear of resting seals and other marine animals on the beach - they can become aggressive if disturbed by curious humans or dogs. Report dead or injured animals on the beach to our office (Ph: 03 5220 5055).
·     Save our endangered  'Hoodies'
Follow the special 'Hooded Plover' signs on beaches during breeding season (September to March). Stay well away from the birds and observe the dog-free zone.
·     Stay off the dunes:
It might seem like fun but playing in sand dunes can not only destroy these areas but can be dangerous.  Dunes are restricted areas and running and jumping in them causes serious damage to the vegetation which holds the dunes together, wreaking havoc on habitat for native animals. Learn more here.
